Grandview Heights 100th Anniversary Proclamation

Written by Grandview Heights' own Chris Karlesky:

WHEREAS, the Grandview Heights neighborhood, adjoining the eastern edge of the City of

Lancaster in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was established in 1925 as an ambitious housing

project named for Grand View Farm of the McGrann family; and

WHEREAS, Grandview Heights is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manheim Township,

having been introduced as Lancaster’s “first development of its kind for people of moderate

means” in the mid-1920s; and

WHEREAS, generations of children have grown up together, walking to Schaeffer Elementary

School, riding bikes on sidewalks, marching in the annual Harvest Parade, playing games at

block parties, and feeling at home in neighbors’ houses; and

WHEREAS, Grandview has evolved over many decades while remaining a family-driven

neighborhood, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of background,

feels valued and respected; and

WHEREAS, residents of all ages look after one another, developing relationships and stories that

form the backbone of Grandview; and

WHEREAS, the neighborhood, originally developed by Samuel Slaymaker, now includes more

than 700 houses and almost 2,000 residents, in homes nestled closely together, along tree-lined

streets, between the historic Lincoln Highway and downtown Lancaster; and

WHEREAS, volunteers have spent countless hours preparing a celebration of the history, people

and neighborly values of Grandview Heights;

NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, that We, the Commissioners of Manheim

Township, with sincere pride in our neighbors and friends, declare today a celebration of 100

years of Grandview Heights!

Signed by the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners:
